4 Natural Remedies to Ease the Effects of the Hot Sun

I love all seasons, but summer and I don’t always get along, I tend to wilt in the heat and I’m not a fan of beachwear either!

With our planet experiencing more weather extremes than I’ve known in my lifetime, we humans (and the wildflowers) have to adapt quickly.

This article is for my fellow wilting wildflowers; a mini-guide to 'ailments from the sun'.

First Aid in the Summer Sun: The Homeopathic Way

Growing up I always knew I was sensitive to the sun. I have red hair and fair skin and when it’s hot my energy drains away.

Back then my youngest brother would burn easily too. Once we had to call a doctor because his sunburnt skin had blistered so severely in the Spanish sun.

Nowadays, when it's hot my (never-thirsty) son will often get headaches and lose his appetite.

I'm so grateful for my homeopathic training as it means I have plenty of natural and effective tools to support my son with these sorts of things, as we didn't know about homeopathy when I was young.

For Dehydration Balancing: Think of this Tissue Salt

Acute: To rebalance fluids in the body fast: Add this tissue salt to your water, (or electrolyte mix), and sip every 10-15 minutes, (while drinking plenty of plain water too).

Indications: Sunstroke. Headaches, Swollen ankles, Bloating and Constipation, Dermatitis or Hives allergy from the sun, itching, Sneezing and runny nose or super-dryness of the eyes, nose or mouth.

Chronic tendency: Try taking this tissue salt 1-2 times daily during the summer as a tonic and preventative.

Top 3 Homeopathic Remedies for 'ailments from sun or heat exposure'

If you suspect sunshine (or hot weather) to be the cause of your symptoms; rest up, hydrate and ask someone to compare these top remedies to find a match.

Dosage idea: Try dissolving 2-3 pills in water (30c is a good potency here) and sip once an hour for 3 hours. Then only repeat if needed. If there's no improvement, you must look at other options.

  • Very sensitive to sunlight - may be sneezing

  • Headaches after sun exposure

  • Chilly - cold to the bone, shivering.

  • Sleepiness with heaviness.

  • Plus other effects like: prickly heat, sunburn, heat exhaustion, swollen legs

  • Better napping and hot bath

Belladonna:

  • No. 1 for sunstroke or sunburn with high fevers; hot, red, burning sensations and throbbing pains.

  • There may be a delirious state of confusion with dilated pupils.

  • All senses are heightened. Symptoms usually come on very suddenly and can be intense or violent.

  • Worse afternoons, no thirst or craving lemonade or lemons.

Apis:

  • Swollen and puffy-looking skin (there may be a rash and nightly itching).

  • Stinging and burning pains with fever.

  • Worse heat and touch, better cold flannel and cool air.

For severe effects of the sun: seek medical attention (take remedies on the way!)

Shock & Extreme Temperatures

No matter how hard you try to keep cool if you're still wilting this year go easy on yourself.

The sun really can produce a shock state in the system.

All we can do is listen when the intelligent healing system cries out for rest, shelter and hydration.

I've noticed some hot wilting plants won’t even respond to watering. But after a few doses of a shock remedy, they'll soon pick themselves up.

Your top first aid options for suspected shock in a wilting plant, human or pet would be:

Aconite, Arnica, Opium, Gelsemium, Ignatia or Bach's Rescue Remedy.

Carefully compare each one using a good homeopathic guidebook before administering.

When in doubt; give Bach's Rescue Remedy, a combination of flowers gentle enough to be suitable for all living things in distress or emergencies (alongside medical care of course)!
